Winter Morning Haze
pastel, 3″ x 3″
SOLD to a collector in New York, NY

The month has flown by, and I can’t believe tomorrow is March already. Studio time is at a premium right now, so I’m grateful I was able to spend some time working on a couple little pastels today. This one captures a sunrise I saw the other morning. It was so hazy, and the sun was a little bright ball making its way through all the fog. The light was so soft and beautiful.

Here’s a little pastel of the frozen marshland in my backyard. We were actually able to ice skate on it this past weekend. How wonderful is that!?

This and a few of my other little paintings will be for sale at Mimosa Gallery’s 2nd Annual “10×10=$100″ Group Show. The opening reception is this Saturday from 5-8 PM. I got a preview of it this afternoon, and I wanted to buy so many paintings!! At prices between $25 – $100, I just might snatch up a couple. You should go!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been almost three months since I’ve been in the studio! How time flies when you’re having fun! :-)
This is a painting I finished earlier this year, but never got around to posting. I was finally able to get some time in the studio today while the little one napped. I finished a very long over due commission, and started another painting inspired by Autumn… which is pretty much over now. It’s a good thing I was able to take a few pictures for inspiration upon my return to the studio. Stay tuned for those.

Nielson House – Summer View

Hi Everyone. I have some great news to share.
My painting “Nielson House, Summer View” has been added to the permanent collection of the Brookside Museum.

I am so honored and proud that one of my paintings will be preserved and displayed for generations to come. It also feels great to think that my children can visit a museum and see my work there.
Speaking of children! Today is my due date, but the baby has decided that she’s not ready to make her debut. We’re anxiously waiting to meet her, but we know she’ll arrive when she’s ready.

Art lovers

Art in the Park went off without a hitch again this year. We had a very nice turnout, and the weather cooperated; the rain didn’t arrive until 20 minutes after we got home.

Thanks to everyone that was able to stop by – it was great seeing you! A very special thanks to those who’ve become new collectors and subscribers. And again, thanks to my family for making this year’s participation so easy. Being 8 months pregnant, it was great that all I had to do was just show up and greet people! :o )

Marsh Colors IV

Marsh Colors III

Marsh Colors IV
pastel
3″ x 3″
SOLD to collectors in Saratoga Springs, NY.

This is the 4th, and last in the series of mini marshes. This one is also one of my favorites – it captures the marsh turning gold for fall.
A fellow pastel painter - Loriann Signori asked how my approach to a pastel differs from my work with oils. My approach is pretty similar to both, but there are a few differences. The great thing about pastels is that for me, there is little to no set-up and clean up time. So for someone with limited time in the studio, they are great to just grab and go. I still like to work on a toned background no matter which medium I’m using. Usually, my canvases are toned a pale ochre/orangey color. I’ve just started to venture out onto different toned paper for the pastels and so far, I LOVE the effects of the deep red. I always do loose sketches before I apply the paint/pastel. My oils get their texture from the thickness of my paint application, while the pastels get their texture from the actual support surface – which is usually Colorfix heavyweight paper (similiar to a very fine sandpaper). I love the immediacy of pastels for times when studio time is precious. It’s quicker for me to get the colors I want with pastels – it’s as simple as picking up a pastel stick, or layering a couple of colors to get the one I need. With oil, I sometimes have to mix several different colors to get just the right one. My oils paintings are pretty immediate too, once I have my colors mixed! I rarely work in layers, and almost always work on a painting until it is complete – never allowing the oil dry before the painting is done. I do enjoy using both for all the reasons mentioned above.

Aren’t these little pieces fun? I had some deep red Colorfix pastel paper that I’d been waiting to use. I thought it would be interesting to do a series of mini marshes. Here’s the first of four.
