A reminder that this is the last week to see my show at Corina in Ballston Spa. The work will be coming down on Thursday evening. It was great showing the work there - Corina is such a wonderful host. I’m very thankful to everyone who has been able to stop in, and to those who were able to add a new painting to their collection.

Marsh Colors IV
pastel
3″ x 3″
Available
Please email me with purchase inquiries.
This is the 4th, and last in the series of mini marshes. This one is also one of my favorites - it captures the marsh turning gold for fall.
A fellow pastel painter - Loriann Signori asked how my approach to a pastel differs from my work with oils. My approach is pretty similar to both, but there are a few differences. The great thing about pastels is that for me, there is little to no set-up and clean up time. So for someone with limited time in the studio, they are great to just grab and go. I still like to work on a toned background no matter which medium I’m using. Usually, my canvases are toned a pale ochre/orangey color. I’ve just started to venture out onto different toned paper for the pastels and so far, I LOVE the effects of the deep red. I always do loose sketches before I apply the paint/pastel. My oils get their texture from the thickness of my paint application, while the pastels get their texture from the actual support surface - which is usually Colorfix heavyweight paper (similiar to a very fine sandpaper). I love the immediacy of pastels for times when studio time is precious. It’s quicker for me to get the colors I want with pastels - it’s as simple as picking up a pastel stick, or layering a couple of colors to get the one I need. With oil, I sometimes have to mix several different colors to get just the right one. My oils paintings are pretty immediate too, once I have my colors mixed! I rarely work in layers, and almost always work on a painting until it is complete - never allowing the oil dry before the painting is done. I do enjoy using both for all the reasons mentioned above.

Aren’t these little pieces fun? I had some deep red Colorfix pastel paper that I’d been waiting to use. I thought it would be interesting to do a series of mini marshes. Here’s the first of four. I really love the texture of the paper, and the broken reds that peek through. This painting is available framed as shown.

It’s great to be back at the easel. It’s hard to believe that this is only my second post since the New Year! Many of you may know by now the reason for my absence. My husband and I are expecting our second child! Here’s the latest picture of the little sprout:

While it’s been a very happy time, I have also had a really bad case of constant nausea and vomitting. I’m now in my second semester and finally things are starting to get back to “normal”. Hopefully that means more time in the studio and less time hugging the toilet. LOL!

Autumn Lane

Matted and Framed to approximately 9 x 12 inches
SOLD to a collector in Florida.
One of my resolutions for 2009 is to collect more original art. Michelle LaLonde (owner of Mimosa Gallery) is making it very easy to do so with her upcoming group exhibition called: “10 x 10 = $100″. The painting above, and a few of my other pieces will be included with many other gorgeous works of art from regional artists. Paintings are sized at 10 x 10 and smaller, each listed at $100 or less. The show runs from 12/31 thru mid February with an opening reception on 1/10. I had a little glimpse of some of the pieces the other night when I picked up my unsold paintings from the Quiet Beauty exhibition. The selection of works is sooo beautiful, electic, and colorful! I have my eye on a couple gems, so I’d better hurry because at $100 each, they won’t last very long!

Winter Barn Across the River

This barn is across the Hudson River from my in-law’s house. It’s my gift to them for Christmas. This wintry view is from the day we had the ice storm. The red was so bright against all the ice-covered trees.
I also wanted to take this moment to wish you all a very merry holiday season, much health, art, and happiness for 2009! I appreciate all the positive feedback and support through out the year. As a token of my gratitude, I will be giving away a small painting to someone on my mailing list. The drawing will be held on Monday, 12/29. I’ll post the painting and announce the winner then.

I’ve been meaning to write about the workshop for over a week now! Where has the time gone?!
I think it went really well. We had a small group, which was great for beginnners. We took up the entire time alotted, and I could have gone on for another couple of hours!
I met some new creative people, that were all very nice. We had two painters, one writer, and another person looking to keep in touch with family through a blog.
Here are some links to the group:
Connie Cassavaugh
Connie is an artist living in the Adirondack region. She drove 2 hours to attend the workshop. She’s in the process of setting up her blog. I’ll add a link once it’s up.I’m looking forward to seeing her work.
Marianne Finnegan
Marianne is an published author, and also a collector of mine. She’s a great writer, and will use her blog, for marketing and creative writing. You can read more about her on her web site.
Susan Wiley
Susan is a wonderful watercolorist, who has an inspirational blog already set up. She also plans to start a new blog where collectors can purchase art directly from her online.
Maryjane Treloar
Maryjane attended the workshop with the interest of creating a blog to keep in touch with family and friends. I won’t post a link here, since it’s mostly for family.
Thank you, Connie, Susan, Marianne and Maryjane for attending. It was wonderful meeting you all, and I’m looking forward to seeing your blogs grow.
Until next time…
Cheers!
